Being Close To Earth Makes Me Very Angry

August 27th!! Mark Your calendars.

The Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August.

It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on August 27th when Mars comes within 34.65 Million miles (a mere job) of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on August 27 @ 12:30 AM. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Cool huh?

Sorry, buddy. This is urban legend. (http://www.snopes.com/science/mars.asp)

If you want some real astronomical spectacle every August, go outside this weekend and observe the Perseid meteor showers. You should be able to see quite a few "shooting stars".

I plan on being around in 2287, so I'm not worried.

It's still worth staying up for the Perseids. I only saw one last night, but I just popped my head out the door for literally 5 minutes.

A few years ago I saw 60 in less than an hour. Tonight (and early tomorrow before dawn) will be the best. Look to the east. You shouldn't be disappointed (unless it's cloudy).
